This is the first house the family Groen lived in on arrival in Canada in 1951. It had no running water and no telephone. I am not sure whether it had running water. Our furniture had not yet arrived, so we slept in a big pile of straw dad and Jetse Reijinga dragged in from the barn. It was a big day when the wooden crate arrived with our furniture. I think it came about six weeks after we did.
Dad had planted a vegetable garden, but had not had a chance to weed it. So before he went to work next morning, he dragged the older of the kids out of bed, and told us "you've got a job!" And so we were introduced to the joys of immigration.
